Vocalisation of 'ng':  The map shows that 'g in 'aingeal' (angel) is vocalised in an area westward from the Great Glen and including South Uist, Benbecula, Mull Tiree, Colonsay and north-west Skye.  If the vocalisation of 'ng' is the more conservative pronunciation, then this would seem to be at  odds with the 'zone of innovation' suggested by Kenneth Jackson (see page on Long-E)

 

In Sutherland, the 'n' in 'gainmheach' (sand) changes to 'r', a change not seen elsehere in the Highlands.

 

 

With 'Inbhear Nis' (Inverness), the 'bh' is dropped in most localities, although it is found in Arran  and northern Sutherland - both being areas relatively remote from the town itself. In Lewis, 'bh' is replaced by 'r', while in most of the northern Hebrides, 'l' (L) is substituted. In Easter Ross and south-east Sutherland, both the 'n' and 'bh' are lost.
