For 'aghaidh' the map shows a marked east-west distinction for the use of medial broad 'gh'.  Pronunciation as Ɣ (see Appendix) is, for the great majority of cases, confined to the eastern Highlands and to Sutherland.  In the areas where Ɣ is not used, the consonant is not sounded although in some cases, e.g. in Islay, a glottal catch was recorded separating the vowels.  In a few scattered cases, 'g' was recorded for 'gh'.

 

In the case of 'lugha', the same east-west division can be seen, but is less marked, with increased use of Ɣ, e.g. in the Western Isles and in the Gairloch area of Wester Ross.

 

With 'roghainn', use of Ɣ was recorded in a much more restricted area, confined to Sutherland and the area  near Gairloch.
